"Sphyraena barracuda"- Great Barracuda

"The great barracuda is a curious, fearsome-looking, usually solitary predator common to reefs and shallows of Florida and the Caribbean. Distinguished by a torpedo-shaped body, large eyes and mouth, formidable teeth, a double notched tail fin and usually the presence of a few scattered black blotches on the lower sides. Maximum length 2 meters, maximum weight 110 lbs. Found predominately at or near the surface. The great barracuda very rarely attacks humans, usually with one quick, fierce strike, which, although serious, is rarely fatal."

While out snorkeling a week ago, I came face-to-face with this guy- the first barracuda that any of us have seen here. I quickly backed up and called to Adrian, who immediately jumped in the water to see. Too bad we didn't have our underwater camera with us that day.

That's quite an experience! Don't know if I'd have the presence of mind to take a picture if I had an underwater camera and was in that position though......

Glad it was you and not me. Where were you at? I've heard they have been seen at Major's, Banana and Marriott.
